Welcome to the sixth grade.  I am Mrs. Brigid Hegemier and I have been teaching in New Bremen Elementary for 27 years.  I live in New Bremen with my husband of 19 years and my two sons who attend New Bremen High School. 
This is a very exciting year.  We are trying a new type of schedule called block scheduling.  I will be teaching your child around 85 minutes of mathematics a day.  Your child will also have Mrs. Poeppelman for social studies/science and Mrs. Niemeyer for Language Arts for around 85 minutes a day each.  The thought behind this is to allow us more time to work on concepts, have time for hands-on discovery lessons and for the teacher the ability to concentrate on one or two classes.  All of this should help your child have more time to learn with deeper meaning and knowledge.

Hello.  Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year.  I will be your child's sixth grade mathematics teacher.  We will be using the Holt Mathematics Course 1 textbook.  This textbook has online homework help and lesson videos.  If your child is sick or comes home and has forgotten how to do the homework, simply go online to the Holt website and watch a lesson video.  There are usually 2-3 videos per lesson to help instruct or refresh your child's memory of the day's lesson.  Your child has the password in his/her math workbook and in the planner.  If you do not have access to the internet, let me know.  I have the same information on a computer disc. 
To help my students better understand how to work story problems, I will be using Singapore Math this year as a supplemantal program.  My hopes are that the students will use this program to help them set up and understand word problems visually which will help move them to the more concrete, written form.
